"Pacific Leaders Co-Design USD 100 Million Program for Ocean Management and Food Systems in Suva"

A group of senior officials and thinkers from the Pacific get together in Suva, Fiji, to co-design a new and hopefully a game changing program valued around USD100 Million that was generously committed from the Bezos Earth Fund. The two main focus of this new program are 100% ocean management and food systems. SPC is leading this co-designing process and was supported by other regional organizations. Secretaries for MELAD Ms Saitofi Miika and MFMRD Mr Riibeta Abeta represented the voices of Kiribati in this meeting. We acknowledge Pacific-Community-SPC and the organizers for the excellent organization and convening of the meeting.

Senior Fishries Officals Attending FFCMIN23 and RFMM5 Meeting

Two senior representatives from Oceanic Fisheries Division are currently joining FFCMIN23 and RFMM5 from 23rd-25th July 2024 in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The high-level meeting discusses, amongst other things, key strategic issues, climate change, regional policies and initiatives, sustainable fisheries management, social sustainability as well as providing strategic direction to the Forum Fisheries Agency.

"Kiribati Joins INFOFISH Governing Council Meeting for the First Time, Kuala Lumpur 2024"

The first time in the history, Kiribati attended the Governing Council meeting of the INFOFISH as a full member to discuss and make decisions over critical issues covering fish trade, market prices, cooperation, and many more. Kiribati engagement in this internationally recognized organization will bring more benefits to the fisheries development space in Kiribati in the future. The meeting was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from the 22-26 July 2024.

Empowering Marine Management: Kiribati SeaSketch Ocean Database Workshop Launch

We're excited to announce the start of our Kiribati SeaSketch Ocean Database workshop!
The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development, with the support of MFAT through the Phoenix Marine Spatial Planning Project, is bringing together key stakeholders from MFMRD, OB (Climate Change Unit), MOJ (Ag’s office), Marine Division, Digital Transformation Office, KPA, MTCIC (Tourism), MELAD (ECD, LMD), and MWYSA to unlock the power of our ocean. The workshop is facilitated by a group of experts from Seasketch and Marine Spatial Planning consultants.
By harnessing our national capabilities on SeaSketch, we're building a strong foundation for Marine Spatial Planning in Kiribati. This innovative tool will help us:
- Visualize and analyze our marine spatial data
- Make informed climate and biodiversity-smart decisions for sustainable ocean management
- Promote data sharing and protect confidential data
- Foster collaboration and transparency among stakeholders
New Zealand’s support is part of its Climate and Biodiversity-Smart Marine Spatial Planning initiative for the Pacific region.
